surrround sound system?

I'm think off get a denon receiver a polk or a jbl center speaker, a maybe a polk 12in sub. I'm really limited to space would that be enough speakers and are they good. Also would a 5.1 surround sound do it or would I need a 6.1 or 7.1 or are they pointless to have if it is a small room that I'm putting them into.

Surround 101. Surround sound means a total of minimum 5 speakers and a sub-woofer. If you use less than 5 speakers it is not surround sound. Period. All receivers are capable of driving less than 5 speakers but your sound will not be as good.

If you want to build your system up one step at a time you would start out with a 7.1 receiver (they are all 7.1 now-a-days) and 2 speakers, left and right. Then you would get a sub-woofer. Next would come a center speaker which should match your left and right speakers for best sound. Then you can get the surround speakers which can also match what you already have, or not. Matching speakers is always the best way to go but if you are not matching at least use speakers from the same manufacturer. Then you can get 2 more if you really want to or have a reason to such as gaming. Since there are almost no 7.1 movies it does not really pay unless you game a lot and can take advantage of a 7.1 system. There are even 10.2 and 14.2 systems or as many more speakers as you wish to use.

Modern home theaters make extensive use of satellite speakers/sub-woofers. The speakers are small enough to easily hang on your walls so the room size is not an issue. The lack of bass in small speakers is made up for with the sub-woofer.

In a small room sub-woofer placement is critical due to standing waves.

BTW the proper placement of the surround speakers is NOT behind you, but on the sides of the room. The additional speakers for a 7.1 system go behind you.
