Server Hosting For Complete Beginners
A lot of people wonder just what a dedicated server is. A dedicated server isn't that complicated a service. In simple terms, a dedicated server is a normal computer that's hosted in a secure datacentre with a fast internet connection. The majority of server hosting companies do all this. The best setup and and environment is crucial for server hosting. Now lets look at what a dedicated server really is. And now, the various descriptions that make a dedicated server.
A dedicated server is a computer
The difference between your home computer and a dedicated server is that your computer (or laptop) will be hosted in a case, that's suitable to sit on a desk or dining room table (which is where I'm writing from on my Macbook at present!). A server on the other hand, will be hosted in a special case, that can be anywhere from 1U or 4U. 'U' refers to rack space. 1U is approximately 3 inches. These servers are specially made in cases that fit in racks. Racks are hosted in datacentres, meant to maximise space available, as well as ensure the efficient distribution of networking cables and air flow. Probably the best known server manufacturer would be Dell. Dell sell laptops and home computers to the home sector. So actually, the main difference between home computer and dedicated server, is the case they are housed in. While dedicated servers are generally more high powered and high end (some can have an array of multiple hard disks for redundancy), they aren't that far unrelated from the modest home PC!
Dedicated servers are hosted in datacentres
The average dedicated server will be in a 1U case. If you think of a pizza box, the height is about the same as 1U! And of course a dedicated server contains high powered server components, and not yummy pizza! An example of this would be Dell's R200 rackmount server. These consume around 0.6 amps, so in a 16 amp rack you'd fit around 26 servers- often more. These servers are fitted to rackmount rails, that fit into the rack, one on top of the other. At the back of the dedicated server is a power port, and a network port. Each rack will have power supply units and at least one switch for the server to connect to. There will be aisels of racks in a datacentre. Some racks host specialist network equipment, switches and routers connected to the internet backbone. If you are looking for this kind of setup, you most likely will need a company like Melbourne Server Hosting.
Fast internet for dedicated servers
The majority of home connections run at around 10mbs. This isn't enough for a dedicated server. A 100mbit connection is expected for dedicated servers. Services such as streaming require this speed. Server hosting, all in all requires the proper server setup, a cool datacentre and high speed internet connection.
Is it possible to use a different power supply for dell computers?
I have a Dell 710 H2C computer(uses 1000W ) and I had a spare CoolerMaster 1200W power supply that I was hoping I can switch out the old power supply and put this one in. Is that possible using a non dell power supply?
Yes you can get a generic power supply but you are better off with a genuine dell power supply because these generic supplies can get extremely hot if you get one that has different specifications than your computer.
Hope this helps!:D
Alienware announces X51 small form factor gaming PC, starting at $699 (Engadget)
Alienware may have just upgraded its Aurora gaming rig, but that's not to keep
the company from giving more diminutive form factors some love. Just this
evening, the subsidiary of Dell announced the X51, a slim gaming PC that's
designed to orient itself either vertically or horizontally on the desktop --
complete with an Alienware logo that properly rotates depending on
positioning. The system includes both Core i3 and i5 options, and features a
slot-loading optical drive with an option for Blu-ray. While it's no shocker,
the X51 can be upgraded to 8GB of RAM and a full 1TB of storage. Further, the
case accommodates a single, full size graphics card and features an external
power supply, (available in 240W or 330W versions, depending on
configuration). Users can also expect HDMI 1.4, on-board WiFi, USB 3.0 and
digital 7.1 surround sound. As a nifty trick, the computer's accent colors can
be conveniently modified with the Alienware Command Center software. Touting
immediate availability, customers can place orders for the X51 right away,
with configurations starting as low as $699. For the complete set of specs
that make up this Mini-ITX gamer, just follow the break.
