FCC Starting White Space Range To Create Wi-Fi On Steroids
Unused pieces of the television broadcast range are called "white space." Because these frequencies have yet to be licensed, they are presently not being used. The Federal Communications Commission (FCC), the agency that controls the TV broadcast spectrum, has announced that it will make white space available for the public to use without a license. "Wi-Fi on steroids is one of the nicknames that has emerged for the wireless networks expected to result. Wi-Fi hot spots that cover vast distances are just one of the benefits predicted when white space mobile becomes a reality. Wi-Fi on steroids will lead to the development of new devices using new applications yet to be imagined. Many believe white space will unleash economic opportunity worth billions to small start-up companies free to use the unlicensed spectrum.
Electronic digital TV puts white space free
The wireless world anticipates that on Sept. 23 the Federal Communications Commission will declare open season on white space. The NY Times reports that Wi-Fi on steroids could be enabled by the unused bands of the TV spectrum freed up by the conversion from analog to digital. Digital TV is more tightly focused on the broadcast spectrum, which leaves more white space between licensed frequencies. The potential of Wi-Fi is greatly enhanced by white space because by using the lower-frequency waves of the TV spectrum, systems will cover broader areas, pass through walls and buildings better and rarely drop connections . Allowing use of white space with no license fees could launch an additional wave of advancement similar to 1985, when the release of unlicensed spectrum resulted in things taken for granted today such as baby monitors and keyless entries.
Could super-charged Wi-Fi cause troubles?
Reaction to the wireless potential of white space hasn't been entirely good. PC World reports that a few industries are skeptical regarding Wi-Fi on steroids. Local TV broadcasters and stadiums that use mobile microphones, for example, anticipate conflict. The concern is that wireless networks with a range of several miles, instead of a number of yards, will interfere with their signal. But the Federal Communications Commission has a plan for that. The agency has mapped out the range use of TV stations and facilities using mobile microphones. Area by area, wireless technology will probably be pre-programmed to choose vacant frequencies.
White space early adopters
White space for Wi-fi is already in use. Networks are being tested for a variety of uses. An article in the Register describes Wi-Fi on steroids in use in Redmond, Wash., at the Microsoft campus. Transmitting from just a pair of locations, the "white-fi" network, as Microsoft calls it, connects users on shuttle buses and in buildings anywhere on its 500-acre campus. As reported in the Times, Super Wi-Fi is getting used in New Hanover County. Public officials are testing white space for a variety of uses. Remote cameras connected via white space keep an eye on traffic patterns for the transportation department. The parks department saves on manpower costs. It uses white space to collect and share data the federal government needs from remote environmental areas . Industries unknown at the present can generate billions within the future with innovations in power distribution, medical technology and more.
