Guide To Help Understand The Power Wattage Spec Of Contemporary Power Amplifiers
Modern amps exist in all shapes and sizes. Finding the perfect model for your application can frequently be tough. There is a flood of different names and technical jargon describing audio amplifiers, like "Class D" or "t-amps". Also, every producer shows a big amount of specs, such as "SNR", "dynamic distortion" etc. I am going to give a quick overview of the output wattage specification in order to help you better know the significance of this specification and how it relates to the performance of an audio amplifier.
Several of the technical jargon which amp producers show often are misleading and do not inevitably offer a decent indication of the real functioning of the amp. Let me now proceed and clarify the wattage rating of audio amps.
"Power" shows how loud your amp can drive your speakers. Depending on your application, you may choose a tiny amplifier offering only a few watts or a larger one delivering several hundred watts. Many home radios only come with amps which have several watts power which typically is adequate for a small room. If you plan to shake your walls then you clearly wish to opt for an amp that offers as much as a few hundred watts. Please note that many amps will start distorting the audio once the audio reaches bigger wattage. If you want to enjoy low-distortion music then you might want to go with an amplifier that is going to offer you higher wattage than you are going to really need.
Output power is either shown as "Watts peak" which means the amp may produce brief bursts of this amount of power or "Watts rms" which describes how much power the amp can offer for a longer amount of time. The peak output power spec in the past habitually led to manufacturers listing large wattage specs for tiny amps. However, in reality those amps would not be able to sustain larger amounts of output power for larger periods of time.
Music and voice is not constant by way of volume. Thus the peak power rating is still essential, though not as significant as the rms power specification. Ideally the amplifier is going to show both the rms and peak power rating. Having a high peak power rating is going to ensure enough headroom for power peaks which are common in audio signals. Having enough headroom is essential given that music signals differ a great deal from sine wave signals which are used to measure rms power. Brief peaks of high power are often found in audio signals. These bursts are going to drive the amp into large distortion unless the peak power is high enough.
Usually the impedance of the speakers that you attach to the amplifier will determine how much power the amplifier may provide. Speaker impedance is measured in Ohms. Typically speakers have an impedance between 4 and 8 Ohms. An audio amplifier which has a set internal supply voltage is going to have a maximum output signal swing that is restricted by that supply voltage. If you are driving an 8-Ohm speaker then the amp must output two times the output voltage than when driving a 4-Ohm speaker in order to output the same amount of wattage. Frequently maximum output power is given for a 4-Ohm speaker impedance. However, ideally the maker will tell which loudspeaker impedance the power rating is being referenced to. Please note that several amplifiers cannot drive speakers with extremely low loudspeaker impedance.
